Glass art for living spaces in two variations
Art on canvas, art on paper, art in glass – for Jakob Lang this does not make much of a difference. “I think the art of making stained glass windows, a centuries-old craft which everybody knows from churches and which has been influenced by different artists over many artistic periods, is seeing a revival in our days. All over the world, many artists have enlarged the repertoire of glass art by their works and some of them even set new standards; in doing so, they demonstrate in how many different ways coloured glass can be made use of – also in contemporary art”, the artist comments.
“Derix Glasstudios Taunusstein”, a world leader in manufacturing glass art, gave the artist the opportunity to make free works in glass according to his own ideas.
It is the heart’s desire of the artist to bring these beautiful glass artworks to galleries and living spaces because, as he says jokingly, “…not everyone has at home a pointed arch window, 18 meters high, that could be fitted with stained-glass windows”.
The artist wants to re-explore everything that is possible with glass: With free and unimpeded visual impact and penetration he breathes some fresh air into glass art.
Candidly and without any prejudice the artist leaves behind conventional ways and techniques of glass painting and uses the tools he is familiar with from oil painting. Adopting his distinctive palette knife rhythms he develops individual techniques and his own understanding of vitreous enamels and coloured glass.
As he himself comments:
“Glass is definitely a material that brings the expressiveness of my series and techniques very close to what I imagine them to be. It gives a home to my works and helps them reach their goal, if I may say so. With light I can make these precise decisions with regard to colour that I carry within me. It makes me calm, helps me reflect, gives me the greatest joy and leaves me in awe. Almost without exception I am speechless when I stand in front of these works. The draw me into another world.”
The glass artworks of Jakob Lang are reminiscent of contemporary oil paintings… and yet they are made of hand-blown broad sheet glass as well as hand-coloured glass.
His “Transmitted Light” series presently comprises 7 works which he frames in custom-made, matt-finished wooden frames to be placed in front of a suitable window by means of thin steel cables or iron chains: small “windows” of church glass for living spaces in two variations.
