…when script turns to dance and dance turns to form

2005-2008 Calligraphy

For more than 9000 years people of different cultures have made use of signs, script and symbols in order to communicate, capture things, express themselves and describe. Depending on the people group, culture or individual character of the writer scripts on stone, papyrus, parchment and paper display both differences and similarities.

Repetitions of patterns as well as likenesses of form and character can be recognized in this huge repertoire of scripts. Every sign, every letter, every word has its unambiguous correlation to a certain term or statement in order to make it understandable and usable for every beholder. This way of expression makes room for a scope of individual writing styles, flows and the personality of someone’s handwriting.

In the Calligraphy series all types of expression, sweeps and signs were fused into one by individual style.

From 2014 Gut Writings

In order to return to the origins of script and use the whole gamut of form and expression, systematic and deliberate use was made of all strokes, sweeps and rhythms of scripts that I know of.

Based on the original, the writing – respectively drawing – was, in the end, left to itself again during the work process incorporating a free flow of the brush and gut feelings. In this way writings, signs, dance, figures, spaces and worlds emerged.

This series comprises more than 30 works of art and keeps growing.
